Database / CSV import
The database / CSV import feature permits you to create a catalogue quickly, by importing data from a database or from Excel. You can also automatically import images and the program can automatically generate thumbnails for the subcategory pages, if needed.
You can easily create your own custom template for the product pages. The program can automatically manage categories and subcategories.
The things you need are
1) a CSV data file (comma separated value; more info see below), with the data of your products and (if any) references to the image files
2) the image files (if any)
3) the template for the product pages (it is a one-page HyperPublish file saved to a specific folder; you can create and store infinite templates; some are supplied)
Any database you have is ok and can generate the CSV file. There are dozens of different database brands out there (Oracle, DB2, Microsoft Access, MySQL, Interbase, Paradox, Informix, Fulcrum, DBase, SQL server, FoxPro, Firebird, and much more...): we chose to rely on CSV format as any database (and also other programs such as Excel) can save/export to a CSV file.
For more information you may test the trial edition that contains all the data (one simple CSV file + images) for creating by yourself a quick and simple example catalogue. It is a small music CD catalog that you can create in 5 minutes by following the short Tutorial available under the ?-Help menu. We could explain everything with 10 pages of blah blah but you will save time by testing this simple example where most options are used: by the way we are here to help: for any questions about this example do not esitate, contact us or use the web forum.
Everything can be edited after the import, so you can add pages, change links, edit descriptions, etc.
Last but not least, this versatile CSV import is very good not only for creating product catalogs on CD, but also for Websites.
Dynamic websites (the common solution when you have a website that lists a lot of products from a database) have received wide acceptance and are very easy to maintain, but at a certain level of popularity they can overload your server, which may not be able to handle the traffic and may require investment to increase its capacity (memory, bandwidth, etc.). Additionally, dynamic webpages are very often ignored by search engines.
Using HyperPublish and the CSV import you can create your own web catalogs for products as static pages: hundreds or thousands of description pages, simple web pages that does not require the installation of any special drivers or software on the server.
